Southern Carpathian Mountains, Romania
45.478549,25.01577 The Southern Carpathian Mountains in Romania are home to the largest continuous stand of virgin forest left in Europe. When considered with the rest of the Carpathian Mountain range, they become the second longest mountain chain in Europe, spanning seven countries, and house the largest population of brown bears and wolves on the continent.

Imatong Mountains, Eastern Equitoria, South Sudan 3.946461,32.909889 A former anthropology professor of mine enumerated language surveys of this area in the 1970's. At the top of a rather dodgy mountain road, he was surprised to find pine plantations, trout streams, and a beautiful stone guesthouse with a roaring fire in the fireplace. This whole area fascinates me: ecologically (situated between biomes), biologically (a number of endemics), historically (Samuel & Florence Baker and Emin Pasha both described the region), and politically (SPLA was headquartered near the area and John Garang was killed in a helicopter crash near here). Wulingyuan, Hunan, China
29.399375,110.423927 This area in China has over 3000 freestanding karst pillars, some of which are over 2,500 (800m) high! Parts of the region are virtually inaccessible due to the incredibly rugged nature of the terrain. Dizin, Iran
36.050105,51.414857 When I think of Iran, it's usually not for skiing, but because of the high altitude (2,600m-3,600m) of the mountains, the slopes are often open much longer than their European counterparts. Lake Danao, Ormoc, Leyte, Philippines
11.072582,124.690983 I'm hoping to have a chance to visit when we visit Catbalogan via Tacloban in December Makiling Forest Preserve, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines

-9.20895,34.301033 I'd love to visit this gorgeous temperate ranch, adjoining a game reserve and situated on the highest plateau in southern Tanzania. |
