Southern Carpathian Mountains, Romania
45.478549,25.01577 The Southern Carpathian Mountains in Romania are home to the largest continuous stand of virgin forest left in Europe. When considered with the rest of the Carpathian Mountain range, they become the second longest mountain chain in Europe, spanning seven countries, and house the largest population of brown bears and wolves on the continent.

At the top of a rather dodgy mountain road, he was surprised to find pine plantations, trout streams, and a beautiful stone guesthouse with a roaring fire in the fireplace. This whole area fascinates me: ecologically (situated between biomes), biologically (a number of endemics), historically (Samuel & Florence Baker and Emin Pasha both described the region), and politically (SPLA was headquartered near the area and John Garang was killed in a helicopter crash near here).
